Whether Margot Robbie will continue playing Harley Quinn in the DC Universe remains an open question, and Robbie herself has never definitively ruled out a return. Still, it has been five years since she last appeared in "The Suicide Squad," and DC has undergone a sweeping creative overhaul in the meantime. That has left many fans skeptical that Robbie will ever reprise the role. James Gunn, however, has not given up on working with her again.

Speaking on DC’s latest official podcast, "The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast," Gunn acknowledged that Robbie’s Harley Quinn has not yet been fully locked into DC Universe canon. The studio has yet to establish its plans for Joker, the character most closely tied to Harley, while Robbie has not decided whether she wants to return. “I don’t know if she wants to keep playing Harley,” Gunn said. “She may have moved on from the character, and she’s an even bigger star now than she was before, so I don’t know what she’ll decide. But I’m almost certain I’ll use Harley Quinn in the DC Universe. If Margot wants to come back, I’ll bend over backwards, change whatever plans I need to and explain her return within the story. If she doesn’t, then I’ll cast someone else, and I won’t have to figure out how to connect it to ‘The Suicide Squad.’” Ultimately, Gunn said, the decision rests with Robbie.
