LEGO Technic 42254 Solar System Planets in Orbit Sets All Eight Planets in Motion at Different Speeds

Danish building-block brand LEGO is expanding its LEGO Technic lineup with the new space-themed Solar System Planets in Orbit set. This working brick-built model recreates the Sun and all eight planets, using a hand crank and internal gear mechanism to send every planet orbiting the Sun simultaneously at a different speed. The complete set contains 572 pieces, is priced at $99.99, and launches January 1, 2027.

LEGO Technic previously explored orbital motion with 2024’s 42179 Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit, which uses gears to simulate Earth orbiting the Sun and the Moon traveling around Earth. Set 42254 expands that concept to the entire Solar System, covering Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars as well as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Each planet connects to its own gear assembly and support arm. Turn the crank on the side, and all eight travel along their respective orbits, bringing the motion of the Solar System right to your desktop.

Each planet uses distinct colors and LEGO elements to capture its recognizable appearance. Jupiter features its signature bands, while Saturn includes a planetary ring made from transparent elements. The base also features individual information panels for all eight planets, giving builders a quick introduction to each world. The planets can also be repositioned by hand to line them up, making the finished model an interactive miniature Solar System display.
