Bandai Spirits' Hobby Division officially announced today, September 2nd, the first entry in their brand-new Gunpla series, "MGEX," with the "MGEX 1/100 Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka," slated for release in September 2020.
The "MGEX (MASTER GRADE EXTREME)" series is a new product line launched to commemorate Gunpla's 40th anniversary. This series leverages Gunpla's accumulated technology and composite materials to express the unique themes of each mobile suit, pushing the "extreme expression" of Mobile Suits. Compared to standard "MG" products, MGEX kits feature more luxurious specifications and come with a proportionally higher price tag.
The inaugural release, "MGEX 1/100 Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka," features an entirely new sculpt, thoroughly supervised by popular mechanical designer Katoki Hajime. Its signature Destroy Mode transformation mechanism has been redesigned for a more intuitive and fluid conversion. The kit also includes newly designed waterslide decals.
The biggest selling point, however, is the series' inaugural theme: "Extreme Lighting Mechanism." Utilizing a space-saving, flexible new material called "FLEXIBLE LED SHEET," thin LED lights are embedded within the 1/100 scale inner frame and shields. Once connected to a power source in the display base, the transparent Psychoframe illuminates, cycling through red and green light effects with dynamic intensity changes. This innovative design brings together transformation, lighting, color variation, and articulation into one stunning package.
For armaments, the kit includes a Beam Magnum, Hyper Bazooka, three Shields, six Beam Gatling Guns, and four Beam Sabers. The large, dedicated display base can be used to hang weapons, store batteries and wiring, and recreate scenes such as hangar maintenance or the awakened state with the three Shields deployed.
