BANDAI SPIRITS Company's HOBBY Division in Japan has announced the latest product from the Macross series' 'HG (High Grade) 1/100 scale' model kits: the 'HG 1/100 VF-22S Sturm Vogel II (Maximilian Jenius's Unit)', scheduled for release in February 2025.
During the Macross Plus era, the YF-21 Sturm Vogel competed with the YF-19 Excalibur for the next-generation main mass-production fighter, and although it was defeated, such an excellent performing aircraft did not disappear into the annals of history. Instead, it was redeveloped into the 'VF-22 Sturm Vogel II', a special operations aircraft. This machine largely abolished the brainwave-controlled BDI system, instead using it for assistance, and redesigned the cockpit structure to be suitable for manual operation. The VF-22S, which appeared later in Macross 7, is a commander's unit with enhanced communication capabilities. It was piloted by various individuals, including Gamlin Kizaki, leader of the special forces unit 'Diamond Force', and the married couple Max and Milia.
The 'HG 1/100 VF-22S Sturm Vogel II (Maximilian Jenius's Unit)' is a modification of the previously released Gamlin Kizaki unit. It recreates the distinctive blue armor of Max's unit through new molded part colors, while the cockpit canopy cover is made from polarized molded material. The new decals, which feature aluminum vapor deposition on PET film, are extremely thin, have high opacity, and vibrant color reproduction, helping unpainted straight-build modelers to accurately reproduce various color blocks and markings on the aircraft.
The product adopts the series' characteristic 'simple transformation' design, allowing the unit to be reassembled into three forms: FIGHTER, GERWALK, and BATTROID, by swapping parts. This fully unleashes the excellent articulation design, composed of numerous movable axes, allowing players to enjoy handling it with greater confidence. It can be combined with accessories such as the GUNPOD and shield punch effects to recreate dynamic combat poses.
