George R.R. Martin Wants to Write Abandoned HBO "Game of Thrones" Spinoff — With One Major Condition

HBO's "Game of Thrones," an adaptation of George R.R. Martin's novels, premiered in 2011 and quickly became a global phenomenon, captivating audiences with its epic storytelling. While the series faced controversy and a divisive ending starting in 2019, its legacy continued with the 2022 prequel series "House of the Dragon," based on "Fire & Blood," which garnered widespread critical acclaim.

Recently, "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin took to his blog, "Not a Blog," to discuss a "Game of Thrones" spin-off centered on Braavos that HBO had once developed but ultimately scrapped. Martin revealed that the concept for the city's design drew inspiration from Amsterdam and other European cities. He also expressed his desire to personally write the story of Braavos in novel form, bringing to life a narrative that never made it to the small screen.

"One day, I will write the Braavos story that we developed for HBO," George R.R. Martin stated. "Sadly, they decided to pass on it a few years ago, but that does not mean I have to pass on it as well. But first, I need to finish 'The Winds of Winter.' And when that's done, if I still have time, I might even take another trip to Amsterdam."

"The Winds of Winter" was originally slated for publication between 2014 and 2018, but its release has been delayed for a decade. While fans are undoubtedly excited by the prospect of a "Braavos" story, the uncertain release date for "The Winds of Winter" raises questions about when, or if, Martin's promised follow-up will ever see the light of day.
