The fifth "The Matrix" film, with "The Cabin in the Woods" director Drew Goddard taking over writing and directing duties, has been notably quiet since its development was announced last year. Recently, however, Will Smith reignited fan speculation with a post seemingly hinting at his involvement. Now, beyond Smith, another actor is rumored to be a potential new cast member for "The Matrix 5."

According to MyTimeToShineH, a source known for exclusive scoops, multi-hyphenate Ariana Grande is reportedly vying for a major role in "The Matrix 5." The specific character remains unknown. Grande's starring turn in last year's "Wicked: Part 1" grossed over $700 million globally and received overwhelmingly positive reviews, positioning it as a strong contender for this year's awards season. Given her current popularity, Grande certainly has an advantage in securing the role.

Grande has previously stated publicly that her fulfilling experience on "Wicked" rekindled her love for comedy and reignited her passion for acting. She plans to dedicate more time to her acting career in the future, slowing down her music production. However, Grande's past roles have primarily been in comedies, making the "Matrix" series' sci-fi genre relatively unfamiliar territory for her. It remains to be seen if Warner Bros. will indeed be willing to cast her in such a departure.
"The Matrix 5" will be solely written and directed by Goddard, marking the first installment in the franchise without either of the Wachowski sisters at the helm. Lilly Wachowski will not be returning, and Lana Wachowski, who solely directed "The Matrix Resurrections," will step back to serve only as an executive producer this time.
