When you hear "locksmith shop," you probably picture a small, unassuming space with a skilled artisan inside. Most locksmiths, especially in many parts of the world, tend to have traditional storefronts that don't exactly scream "attention-grabbing."
But recently, a peculiar locksmith shop in Japan has been making waves on X. Known as "Honmono no Jomaeshi" (The Real Locksmith), this establishment's exterior signage looks like something ripped straight from a fantasy manga or an otherworldly realm, leaving many netizens utterly bewildered. What's the deal with this bizarre-looking locksmith?

Located near Sapporo's Kotoni Station, "The Real Locksmith" isn't just tucked away in a narrow alley; its facade is plastered with mysterious, esoteric phrases like "Cancer Eradication," "Super Divine Energy," and "God's Philosophy." Founded in 1981, the shop has been around for over 40 years, and one X user aptly described it as feeling like "stepping into another dimension entirely."

Many have drawn parallels to the works of manga artist Yoshiharu Tsuge, particularly his iconic piece "Nejishiki" (The Screw-Style). Tsuge, a contemporary of Osamu Tezuka, diverged from the mainstream shonen themes of passion, friendship, and struggle. Instead, he delved into the darker, more introspective corners of the human psyche, creating works steeped in an unsettling melancholy and internal conflict. His stories often feature marginalized failures and dilapidated old streets, with this bleak, nihilistic atmosphere becoming his signature style.
The shop's vibe reminds many of the ophthalmologist's office depicted in Tsuge's "Nejishiki," which similarly exudes an inexplicably eerie atmosphere.

▼ The eye clinic in "Nejishiki" was reportedly inspired by this 1962 street photo of Tainan, taken by photographer Wang Shuang-chuan.

However, one X user who specializes in street photography noted that the shop's appearance wasn't always this way. Over the past two decades, it has undergone significant transformations, becoming increasingly enigmatic.

Despite its unique charm, netizens generally agree that they'd be hesitant to step inside. The exterior truly looks like a scene from another world, with many joking that it would scare them off if they walked past it at night. LOL.

So, if you ever find yourself in Sapporo, perhaps you can check out "The Real Locksmith" for yourself. See if it gives you the creeps!
