Warner Bros. Pulls the Plug: "MultiVersus" to End Service After Fifth Season, Server Shutdown Date Revealed

Player First Games, the developer behind Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's free-to-play crossover fighting game "MultiVersus," which launched in July 2022, has regrettably announced that the title will officially cease operations on May 30, 2025.

The studio confirmed via a post on X (formerly Twitter) and its official website that the upcoming fifth season, set to begin on February 4, 2025, will mark the game's final content update, leading up to its official service termination in May. While online modes will become inaccessible, Player First Games assured players that all previously acquired and purchased content will remain available through local versus and training modes.

Effective immediately, all in-game paid transactions will be disabled. However, players can continue to use existing Gleamium and character tokens to unlock in-game content until the May 30 shutdown. Concurrently, "MultiVersus" will be delisted from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

The decision to shut down "MultiVersus" reportedly stems from Warner Bros. Discovery's assessment of the project's underperformance. During an earnings call in November 2024, the company disclosed that "MultiVersus" significantly underperformed expectations, resulting in an approximate $100 million impairment charge for its games division. This brought the total accumulated losses for the division from gaming ventures to $300 million.

"MultiVersus" isn't the only title contributing to Warner Bros. Discovery's gaming losses; the AAA release "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League," launched in January 2024, also proved to be a financial disappointment. Adding to the challenges, Variety reported last week that David Haddad, President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, announced his departure, signaling the significant hurdles the company faces moving forward.

Despite the game's impending shutdown, the development team aims to deliver a final dose of enjoyment for players. The fifth season will introduce new characters Lola Bunny and Aquaman; Lola Bunny will be available via daily login rewards, while Aquaman can be unlocked through the battle pass.
