The free-to-play crossover fighting game "MultiVersus," which launched in 2022, is set to end service on May 30, 2025, developer Player First Games regrettably announced this past February. The upcoming fifth season will be the final event for the platform fighter.
"MultiVersus" garnered significant attention for its crossover battles featuring a rich roster of Warner Bros. Discovery IP and had cultivated a dedicated fanbase. Consequently, the news of its shutdown was met not only with disappointment from many players but also with what appears to be malicious attacks and threats directed at the development team.

In response, "MultiVersus" Game Director Tony Huynh addressed the situation on X (formerly Twitter):
"We understand this news is sad for everyone, and we as developers feel it too. While everyone has the right to express their thoughts, it crosses a line when it escalates to personal attacks. So I hope everyone can be civil."
"I hope people can understand that this is an incredibly sad time for us on the development team as well," he continued. "I regret the direction the game has taken. This outcome isn't because we didn't work hard enough or didn't care. No one wanted it to come to this."

Beyond the shutdown news, some players also voiced dissatisfaction with the game's character selection process, particularly the exclusion of certain fan-favorite characters while others were chosen. Huynh also explained this:
"I'm truly sorry if we couldn't include your favorite character. I also think Aquaman and Lola Bunny are great, and I hope everyone gets a chance to experience their appeal."
"Character selection involves many factors," he elaborated, "including development time, community demand, collaboration and approval processes with IP holders, potential co-marketing opportunities, and whether the team itself is inspired to create that character. These are all aspects we consider."
