Nintendo Vows Aggressive Preparations for Switch 2, Aims to Combat Scalpers and Ensure Market Supply

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa recently sat down with Japanese media, revealing the company's proactive strategy to ensure a smooth launch for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. His mission? To shut down scalpers and keep the market well-stocked. Furukawa emphasized that Nintendo is drawing on past experiences to prepare, aiming for ample console inventory to meet consumer demand right out of the gate.

According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Furukawa stated during the interview, "We will take every possible measure to combat scalpers and other issues, based on the experience we've accumulated so far. We are actively preparing." This statement signals that Nintendo is already cooking up countermeasures for potential resale problems during the Switch 2's launch, determined to avoid a repeat of the original Switch's debut, which saw supply shortages fuel rampant scalping.

Interestingly, reports suggest Nintendo initially planned to unveil its next-gen console, the Nintendo Switch 2, by late 2024. However, the company ultimately pushed back the release. The goal? To guarantee a robust initial stock and a killer lineup of launch titles, significantly reducing the chances of scalpers hoarding consoles and jacking up prices.

As for pricing, Furukawa hinted that the Switch 2's price tag will "consider consumers' expectations for Nintendo product affordability," suggesting the new console might keep things budget-friendly to entice a wider audience.

Furukawa also stressed that "as long as there's market demand for the original Nintendo Switch, we will continue to support the existing console." This commitment explains why highly anticipated titles like "Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A" and "Metroid Prime 4 Beyond" are still slated for release on the current Nintendo Switch.

Market Forecasts: Nintendo Switch 2 Could Top 4 Million US Sales in 2025

Meanwhile, market research firm Circana predicts that if the Switch 2 launches in the first half of 2025, its US sales could blast past 4 million units, snagging a third of the total console sales for that year.

Another analytics firm, DFC Intelligence, projects that the Switch 2 could sell over 80 million units by the end of 2028—a figure that even outpaces the original Switch's 55.77 million sales within its first three years. Adding to the hype, Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda believes the Switch 2 could hit 6 million sales within just its first three months, underscoring the sky-high market anticipation for the new console.
