Nintendo's Latest Patent Hints at Switch 2 Joy-Cons with Mouse Functionality and a Brand-New Design

A new Nintendo patent, recently made public, offers a tantalizing glimpse into the future of the Nintendo Switch 2. The filing reveals not only that the next-gen Joy-Con controllers might retain their classic design but also that they could pack a surprising new feature: mouse functionality! And if that wasn't enough to get fans buzzing, the patent documents also hint at an entirely new controller design, sparking even more speculation among players and industry insiders alike.

According to reports, this intriguing patent has been officially registered in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database and was formally published on February 7, 2025.

Diving into the document, the patent showcases various angles of the right Joy-Con. One particular image clearly illustrates the controller being used sideways, functioning as a mouse. This aligns perfectly with earlier rumors and even a previous demonstration video for the first Nintendo Switch 2, suggesting this feature has been in the works for a while.

But here's where it gets really interesting: as mentioned, the patent also includes design schematics for a completely new pair of controllers. From the descriptions, these new input devices appear to be conceptualized as a standard gamepad split in half, with each segment equipped with an optical sensor.

The patent further elaborates on the "mouse" function, detailing how these separate input devices can be combined via an "unshown attachment" to form a complete, two-handed controller. The description states: "The first input device and the second input device can be used as an integrated controller, held by the user with both hands. Each device can also be attached to a peripheral device." Talk about modularity!

Of course, Nintendo has yet to officially unveil any specific details regarding the new controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2. However, the emergence of this patent undoubtedly opens up a world of possibilities for the upcoming console. For more concrete information, fans will have to patiently wait until the Nintendo Direct presentation scheduled for April 2, 2025.
