The thriller novel "The Executioners," famously adapted by Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese into "Cape Fear," was announced two years ago for another reboot. This time, however, it's being developed as a streaming series. After a period of development, the main cast is now coming together, with Amy Adams and Javier Bardem confirmed to star. Patrick Wilson is reportedly still in negotiations to join the project.

"The Executioners" has been adapted into feature films twice before: Scorsese's 1991 "Cape Fear" and, earlier, J. Lee Thompson's 1962 film, also titled "Cape Fear." The upcoming series is described as an unconventional adaptation of the original novel and its previous cinematic iterations, set in contemporary times. The story will explore 21st-century America's fascination with true crime, following a married couple of lawyers who face an unforeseen storm when an infamous killer they once prosecuted is released after years of wrongful imprisonment and quietly plots a scheme for revenge.

Adams and Wilson are set to portray the married lawyer couple, while Bardem will play the killer. Nick Antosca, creator of the limited series "A Friend of the Family," will serve as showrunner for the series. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, who produced the 1991 "Cape Fear" film, are also returning as executive producers. The series is slated to premiere on Apple TV+.
