Captain America: Brave New World Production Turmoil: Harrison Ford's "Hulk-Like" Temper Reportedly Caused Headaches Amid Massive Reshoots and Giancarlo Esposito's Last-Minute Casting

Even before its release, "Captain America: Brave New World" has been plagued by rumors of significant plot changes and at least four rounds of reshoots during its production. Now, more behind-the-scenes details are emerging.

Recently, Vulture reported that "Brave New World" was initially rumored to have ballooned past $300 million in budget after extensive reshoots. However, Marvel Studios later clarified through the media that the actual cost was approximately $180 million. Vulture's report, however, suggests that Marvel had already spent over $180 million even before the reshoot phase began. This implies that Marvel's public statement of $180 million might be an attempt to quell financial concerns surrounding the film.

Anonymous sources from the crew also indicated that "Brave New World" received extremely poor internal test screening scores last year, leading to more prolonged reshoots. These extensive reshoots meant that much of the originally filmed material was scrapped, with many significant scenes completely cut. Director Julius Onah recently confirmed that Giancarlo Esposito's character, the leader of the Serpent Society (pictured above), was one of the additions made during reshoots, a role that was not originally part of the film and was decided at the last minute.

Beyond plot issues, the quality and believability of the action sequences also failed to impress crew members. The high difficulty of reshooting these scenes was a major factor in the budget's escalation, leaving many crew members feeling exhausted and disheartened.

Further complicating the production of "Brave New World" was Harrison Ford, who plays President Ross. Ford is famously known in Hollywood for his short temper, and while he often jokes about it, self-deprecation doesn't necessarily mean he's willing to change. According to Vulture's report, he was apparently as volatile as his on-screen character, with the key difference being that President Ross actively tries to control his temper, while Ford perhaps saw no need to alter his demeanor.

Sources involved in the production claimed that Ford was genuinely difficult to work with on set and prone to outbursts. However, as the film's most senior and top-tier star, everyone felt compelled to appease him, creating an awkward atmosphere on set and causing headaches for Onah, who was directing a blockbuster production for the first time.

Sources also mentioned that Ford disliked wearing the motion-capture suit for his Red Hulk scenes. It was speculated that this aversion might partly stem from Ford's arm being injured in a plane crash during production – a frequent occurrence for the avid pilot – making the process of donning and removing the suit particularly cumbersome. However, other sources refuted these claims, stating that allegations of Ford being difficult on set were unfounded.
