Live-Action "Dungeons & Dragons" Series Reboot Lands at Netflix; "Stranger Things," "Deadpool & Wolverine" Director to Produce

Two years ago, Paramount Pictures released "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" to critical acclaim, earning high praise from nearly everyone who saw it. Unfortunately, not enough people did. The film, which cost $150 million to produce, grossed just over $200 million worldwide, leaving fans disappointed. While a sequel to "Honor Among Thieves" seems unlikely, Hollywood's interest in adapting the "Dungeons & Dragons" property remains strong.

According to a report from Deadline, Netflix is now developing a live-action "Dungeons & Dragons" series titled "The Forgotten Realms," based on the iconic campaign setting of the same name. Shawn Levy, known for directing "Deadpool & Wolverine" and several episodes of "Stranger Things," is set to executive produce. Drew Crevello, who served as showrunner for "WeCrashed," will be the series creator.

The project is the same live-action series Paramount Pictures announced four years ago. Originally, "Red Notice" director Rawson Marshall Thurber was attached as the creator, with Crevello joining later.

The series was initially slated for an exclusive release on Paramount's streaming service, Paramount+. However, plans were scrapped following a shift in strategy at Paramount+ and Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne, the company holding the "Dungeons & Dragons" production rights. After joining as a producer, Levy brought the project to Netflix, his frequent collaborator on "Stranger Things," and the streamer boarded the project. Crevello is now the sole creator, developing a completely new story with a fresh concept. This version of "The Forgotten Realms" is reportedly unrelated to both Thurber's initial pitch and the 2023 feature film. According to Deadline, a successful series could potentially launch a new "Dungeons & Dragons" screen universe.
