Vtuber "Graduation" Goes Sideways? Japanese Agency Blunders Announcement, Leaving Talent Stunned: "What Just Happened?!"

For anyone following Vtubers, while the streams are a blast, the scariest words to hear are usually "major announcement" or, even worse, "graduation." It's a heart-dropping moment, as not every Vtuber career lasts forever, and eventually, there comes a time to say goodbye to their audience.

But recently, something wild went down on X in Japan. On February 18, the official X account for Vtuber group "Light Up!" announced that member Yorai Nemuru's contract was expiring, and she would "graduate" on February 28, 2025. The kicker? Yorai Nemuru herself responded on X with a bewildered "Huh?!" — clearly caught off guard. This instantly sparked a frenzy among fans and netizens, all wondering: what in the world just happened?

The drama unfolded on the evening of February 18. The "Light Up!" official X account dropped the announcement, stating Yorai Nemuru's contract would end on February 28, and that she would continue her activities as an independent Vtuber afterward.

Just an hour later, Yorai Nemuru herself retweeted the official announcement with a single, confused "Huh?!" Fans were left scratching their heads, unsure if it was a joke or something more serious.

The next morning, February 19, Yorai Nemuru posted again, stating she was checking with the company about the situation and would update fans soon.

Initially, many fans brushed it off as a prank or a surprise event. But as time passed, it became clear this was no joke. Yorai herself was visibly shocked by the "graduation" announcement, leading fans to worry: "Is this for real?", "Something feels off...", "That reaction means it's serious, right?"

Then, on the evening of February 19, "Light Up!" posted again, clarifying that the announcement was actually due to an internal communication error, which led to the scheduled release time being moved up. They apologized to Yorai and her fans for the blunder.

After seeing the apology, Yorai quickly posted on X herself: "I will be graduating." She also revealed she'd be holding a live stream that evening to explain everything to her fans personally.

During her live stream, Yorai Nemuru explained that she had already discussed it with her manager and decided to graduate after her contract expired on February 28. Her manager's response at the time was, "Just wait until the contract ends, and we'll go from there, right?" They had agreed to officially announce her graduation on February 28 itself. The plan was to gradually break the news to fans, allowing them to slowly come to terms with it. But then the announcement dropped 10 days early, leaving her completely bewildered: "I had no idea what was going on!"

She even joked that she's usually the one who almost spills the beans, but this time, her own company leaked the news! She found it both frustrating and hilarious: "I can't believe my own company spoiled it for me – that's just too much!" She ultimately confirmed that she would indeed graduate on February 28, emphasizing that it wasn't a forced departure but a planned event. The early announcement simply made everyone assume there was some behind-the-scenes drama.

▼ Her live stream that day also saw over 1,000 concurrent viewers, a rare feat for a "small box" Vtuber with just over 10,000 subscribers.

While the whole mix-up ultimately ended with an "early announcement," and Yorai Nemuru didn't change her decision, the incident still left many fans questioning "Light Up!"'s internal management.

▼ Many fans voiced their displeasure in the company's subsequent apology announcement.

After all, artist contracts and graduation details are highly sensitive company secrets. Leaking them early can damage an artist's image, jeopardize business collaborations, and even lead to legal repercussions. It just goes to show that while the Vtuber trend is booming with more people joining, there are tons of these "small box" agencies in Japan, and the support they can truly offer is often limited. Perhaps this is just part of the "small box" Vtuber ecosystem.
