After weeks of casting rumors, HBO's upcoming "Harry Potter" series has officially confirmed its first cast member. Two weeks ago, 79-year-old veteran actor John Lithgow, known for his roles in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "Interstellar," was reported to be the top choice for the "new Dumbledore." Now, Lithgow himself has confirmed that he has accepted the role.

While recently promoting a new film, Lithgow confirmed his participation in the rebooted series during an interview with Screen Rant. He admitted that the role offer came as a complete surprise and was not an easy decision to make. "This isn't an easy decision, because this role will define the last chapter of my life," Lithgow stated. "I'm scared, but also excited, because some excellent creators are turning their attention back to 'Harry Potter,' which is why it's such a difficult decision. By the time the wrap party happens, I'll probably be 87, but I've said yes."

Previous actors who have portrayed the iconic headmaster include Richard Harris, who first played the role in the original film series' first two installments, and Michael Gambon, who took over from the third film onwards. Jude Law played the character in two "Fantastic Beasts" films, while Toby Regbo made two guest appearances as a younger Dumbledore in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1" and "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald."
