Japanese company X-PLUS (株式会社エクスプラス) recently unveiled a new product based on the classic film "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms," which inspired the Godzilla series – the "Rhedosaurus" 1/72 scale assembly model. The suggested retail price is 6,600 JPY, and it is expected to be released in June 2025!

"The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" (also translated as "Sea Dragon King") is an action-horror film released by Warner Bros. in 1953. It is the first film in cinematic history to feature a monster affected by nuclear testing, telling the story of the ancient monster Rhedosaurus, unleashed from its icy seabed prison by a nuclear explosion, as it invades the East Coast of North America. Rhedosaurus was entirely depicted using stop-motion animation in the film. Although the filming techniques differed, this work had a profound impact on "Godzilla," which premiered in Japan the following year, and subsequent related films.
This X-PLUS Rhedosaurus 1/72 scale assembly model stands approximately 23 cm tall when completed. It references the classic scene from the film where Rhedosaurus destroys the Maine lighthouse. The overall design uses the same mold as the plastic model released in 2024, faithfully recreating Rhedosaurus's puppet appearance from the film, with sculpted details such as its scales and dorsal spikes. For the lighthouse, in addition to reproducing its cinematic appearance, details of one side of its brick wall being destroyed and falling due to Rhedosaurus have also been crafted! The images released on the official website are of a painted prototype; the actual product is an unpainted assembly model. Toy enthusiasts can unleash their creativity to add color to this classic scene or focus on key details to recreate the texture presented in the black-and-white film!
