According to an exclusive report from veteran film journalist Jeff Sneider's newsletter, The InSneider, Sony's 3000 Pictures is developing a remake of the 1992 psychological erotic thriller "Single White Female." Rising stars Taylor Russell and Jenna Ortega are reportedly in negotiations to lead the film. If the deals are finalized, both actresses will also serve as producers.

The original film was based on the novel "SWF Seeks Same" by John Lutz. The story follows Allie, who, after breaking off her engagement with her fiancé Sam, finds a new roommate, Hedy, to help her through a difficult time. However, when Allie and Sam reconcile, Hedy develops a dangerous obsession with Allie, going to extreme lengths to become her. She begins to mimic Allie's appearance and style, an obsession that escalates until she is willing to kill Sam to take over Allie's life, leading to a terrifying and uncontrollable situation.

While "Single White Female" received somewhat mixed reviews upon its release, it was a significant box office hit, earning $84.1 million on a modest $16 million budget. The performances from Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh, who shared a striking physical resemblance, were highly acclaimed. This crucial casting dynamic appears to be a key factor in selecting Russell and Ortega, as their similar features align with the plot's requirement for Hedy's obsessive imitation of Allie.

However, the casting of Russell, who is of mixed Black and white heritage, and Ortega, who is of Latina descent, will almost certainly require the film's title to be changed from the original "Single White Female." This is not the first attempt to reboot the property; in 2016, NBC announced it was developing a series adaptation, but the project never successfully entered production.
