Having starred in video game adaptations like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and "Borderlands," Jack Black isn't just a fan of the genre—he's a hardcore gamer himself, even running his own gaming-focused YouTube channel, Jablinski Games. Black's passion for gaming was on full display during the production of the live-action adaptation, "A Minecraft Movie."

Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Senior Director of Original Content at "Minecraft" developer Mojang Studios, revealed that Xbox consoles and private servers were installed in the trailers for the cast and crew to relax and play during filming. According to Ólafsson, Black was by far the most enthusiastic, approaching the game with a "method acting" spirit and logging over 100 hours of playtime.
"He went completely bonkers," Ólafsson recalled. "He was constantly hoarding things in the mines and looking for Lapis Lazuli because he loved the sound it made. He kept asking me, 'Can I talk about Lapis Lazuli in the movie?'"

Ólafsson also revealed that Black wasn't originally cast to play Steve. "His role was originally a talking pig, and it wasn't until very late in development that we thought of changing him to Steve because we needed an expert and a host-type character in our story," he explained. "This isn't the Steve I know, or the Steve you know; this is Jack Black's Steve. A lot of fans reacted to the first trailer by saying, 'Wait a minute, that's just Jack Black playing himself, he's not playing a character.' And maybe that's true. That's his interpretation of the character and what the character means to him."
