Last December, Universal Pictures made a surprise announcement, entrusting its venerable "The Mummy" IP to frequent horror collaborator Blumhouse Productions for a brand-new reboot. Today, Blumhouse confirmed that the new iteration has officially begun filming in Ireland, simultaneously revealing that Irish actor Jack Reynor (pictured below), known for "Transformers: Age of Extinction," is the first cast member to be announced.
The Hollywood Reporter (THR) added that Reynor's character is reportedly a husband and father who will confront supernatural forces.
Lee Cronin (pictured below), director of "Evil Dead Rise," is writing and directing the new "The Mummy" film, which is slated for a North American release on April 17 next year. Cronin previously confirmed that his version would return to the horror roots of the 1932 original, distinctly moving away from the action-adventure style of the Brendan Fraser and Tom Cruise iterations, while also not simply re-treading the path of the 1932 film.

In recent years, Blumhouse has successfully rebooted other "Universal Monsters" properties for Universal with modest budgets, including the 2020 version of "The Invisible Man" and the upcoming "Wolf Man," which premiered this January. This fourth iteration of "The Mummy" marks the third film in this current wave of reboots. Surprisingly, however, this film will not be distributed by Universal, but rather by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, with the reason for this change currently unknown.
