Marvel Studios’ "The Marvels," reportedly produced for $300 million, faced a disastrous reception upon its release two years ago, ultimately grossing just over $200 million worldwide. This marked a dramatic decline compared to its predecessor, "Captain Marvel," which soared past $1.1 billion globally. Audience reception was equally poor, with many believing the film became a disjointed mess after extensive reshoots and additional photography. Now, "The Marvels" director Nia DaCosta (pictured below) has finally spoken out about her film's fate.

In a recent interview at the STORYHOUSE Film Festival, DaCosta admitted that the version of "The Marvels" audiences saw was not her original cut. She stated, "It's funny because there was a moment where I was like, 'Okay, this is not the movie I pitched, and it's not the movie I shot.' So I've come to terms with it as an experience, a learning curve that makes you a stronger filmmaker."

Previous reports suggested DaCosta departed "The Marvels" post-production midway to begin filming her next project, "Hedda." Some critics viewed this as an irresponsible move, implying a lack of oversight for "The Marvels." DaCosta clarified that "Hedda" was already significantly behind schedule, and she was compelled to complete it as quickly as possible.

DaCosta also expressed her resignation regarding "The Marvels'" outcome. She explained, "They already have a release date, they're already doing prep, and you just have to dive into the core of that process. The way they make these movies is very different from how I would ideally make them, so you just have to go with the flow and hope for the best. This time, it didn't turn out for the best, but you just have to trust the system."
