The live-action adaptation of "Minecraft," titled "A Minecraft Movie," launched in theaters worldwide last Wednesday. Riding on the immense popularity of the original game, the film predictably soared at the box office, far exceeding industry expectations. In North America, its opening weekend grossed a staggering $163 million, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation debut in North American box office history. This achievement surpasses "The Super Mario Bros. Movie"'s previous record of $146 million.

Internationally, "A Minecraft Movie" garnered $144 million, bringing its global opening weekend total to approximately $307 million. Industry analysts and Warner Bros. Pictures had initially projected the film's international opening to be around $65 million, with North American estimates ranging from $70 million to $80 million. However, they significantly underestimated "A Minecraft Movie"'s drawing power, as its actual performance more than doubled those projections. With a production budget of $150 million (excluding marketing), Warner Bros. is poised for substantial profits given this trajectory.
