New Blade Runner Video Game Canceled: Is Amazon's "Blade Runner 2099" Series the Reason?

While Annapurna Interactive, publisher of "Stray," announced the "Blade Runner" spin-off game "Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth" in 2023, another spin-off, "Blade Runner: Time to Live," developed by "Until Dawn" creator Supermassive Games, has now been confirmed as canceled.

According to foreign media reports, "Time to Live" was envisioned as an action-adventure game set in 2065, centering on the last surviving Blade Runner. It aimed to blend stealth, combat, and investigation, marking a departure from Supermassive's signature narrative-driven, choice-based style. The game was set to feature a skill tree and high-tech investigative tools, demonstrating considerable ambition and signaling a potential breakthrough for the studio.

Unfortunately, the game was canceled by the end of the following year, shortly after entering pre-production in Fall 2024. Sources indicate the decision came from "Blade Runner" rights holder Alcon Entertainment, though specific reasons were not disclosed. Speculation suggests the cancellation might be linked to the upcoming Amazon Prime series "Blade Runner 2099," possibly due to conflicting lore or simply budget and strategic considerations.

It's worth noting that this isn't the only "Blade Runner" project in development. "Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth," developed by Annapurna Interactive, is still underway and is expected to bridge the narrative gap between the two films. However, unlike the action-oriented "Time to Live," "Labyrinth" leans more towards a narrative exploration game. Whether players will truly "play" as a Blade Runner, engaging in classic tasks like hunting down and identifying replicants, remains a significant question.
