Gamer Resurrects His 22-Year-Old Dead Game Boy Advance With an Epic RGB & IPS Screen Mod

We've all got one somewhere: a dusty old console, a relic from a bygone era, sitting in a closet. Whether it's a handheld or a home console, time isn't always kind, and things break. With official repair channels long gone, you're often left wondering if these old treasures can ever be brought back from the dead.

Well, one user on X in Japan, Oga Kuz (@oga_kuz_DD), just shared a story of resurrection so epic and heartfelt that it's got the whole internet buzzing. Back in 2001, he begged his parents for a Game Boy Advance (GBA), only for it to die two years later and get banished to a drawer at his parents' house. Now, armed with adult money and skills, he didn't just fix it—he transformed it into something better, earning massive praise from fellow gamers.

Oga Kuz explains: "I finally convinced my parents to buy me this GBA back in 2001, but it suddenly stopped turning on after just two years. It's been sitting at my parents' house ever since..." So, he decided it was time to "revive it with the power of an adult."

But when he opened it up? "A component on the motherboard was completely melted and had fallen off???"

After some research, he discovered the fried part was a crucial "inductor" in the power module—the very culprit behind the GBA's refusal to power on. A quick online search revealed he could get a replacement, which even came with a capacitor, for a mere 293 yen. He hit "buy" immediately.

Once the parts arrived, he got to work desoldering the old wreckage and soldering on the new components. "Honestly, I was pretty scared doing this for the first time," he admitted. "I was wondering if it was even possible to remove by hand." But with a little courage and a lot of brute force, he got the job done.

"My soldering isn't the prettiest, but hey, as long as it works!" He popped in the batteries and... the boot screen flickered to life for the first time in 22 years. He couldn't contain his excitement online, screaming: "22 YEARS! IT'S BEEN 22 YEEAARS!!!!"

But while it worked, the original GBA screen was, to put it mildly, abysmal. "How was anyone supposed to see this thing?! I can't believe I used to play on a screen this dark as a kid. No way."

He decided to go all in, ordering an IPS screen module to add a backlight, adjustable brightness, and even filter effects. But he didn't stop with the visuals. He also upgraded the audio with an amplifier and a new speaker for a massive boost in sound quality and volume. He added, "They actually forgot to ship the speaker at first. I messaged the seller like, 'Hey, I love your awesome parts, but the speaker is missing?' and they sent a replacement immediately. Great service."

Next up: an LED module to make the whole thing glow in the dark. "Why make it light up? BECAUSE IT'S COOL!!!!!"

For the grand finale, he housed all the new components in a slick transparent purple GBA shell, opting for clear buttons to keep that classic vibe. The battery was also upgraded to a modern USB-C rechargeable lithium-ion pack.

Oga Kuz shared his feelings: "The moment it turned on, I literally screamed... My childhood memories, broken for 22 years, were fully resurrected by my own hands!"

After 22 years, he used his "adult money and skills" to not only repair his childhood treasure but also give it a massive upgrade with a modern LCD screen, better speakers, LED lights, a lithium battery, and even USB-C charging. This GBA is now better than ever.

The post immediately blew up online, with users flooding the comments with praise and awe: "The GBA waking up like, 'Where am I... 2025!?'", "I thought this was just a repair story, but halfway through it became a super-modded modernization project. This is insane.", and "I literally burst out laughing on the train when I saw how bright that new screen is. Absolutely god-tier!"

From a broken childhood relic to a fully decked-out 2025-spec custom build, this wasn't just a repair—it was a journey fueled by nostalgia and passion. This is the true meaning of 'evolution'.

If you've got an old console gathering dust in a drawer, maybe it's time to try bringing it back to life. Who knows? It might just be waiting for you to awaken it, ready to shine once more in this new era.
