Marvel Studios' latest theatrical release, "Thunderbolts*", has reportedly garnered strong audience reception and solid opening weekend box office numbers. Clearly pleased with its performance, Marvel Studios is now in talks with "Thunderbolts*" director Jake Schreier (pictured below) to helm the new "X-Men" film, according to an exclusive report from Deadline today. Schreier is reportedly the studio's top choice for the highly anticipated reboot.

Deadline further noted that Schreier had previously been in discussions with other studios for various directing projects. However, he has recently turned down those potential opportunities, a move that typically indicates an individual has committed to one project and is unavailable for others. The "X-Men" reboot is believed to be that likely commitment.

Marvel has a history of tapping directors they've previously worked with to launch new franchises. After helming the highly successful "Captain America" sequels, the Russo brothers went on to direct four "Avengers" installments. Similarly, Matt Shakman, director of the critically acclaimed series "WandaVision," is now set to direct "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." Prior to Shakman, Marvel had initially entrusted the "Fantastic Four" reboot to Jon Watts, director of the first three MCU "Spider-Man" films.

Before Schreier's potential involvement, Marvel had already brought on Michael Lesslie, co-writer of "Now You See Me 3" (also known as "Now You See Me: Now You Don't") and "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," to pen the script. However, with Schreier's addition, a new writer might be sought for further revisions.
