Grand Theft Auto VI's "Violence Is Gool; Thanks Videogames" T-Shirt Sparks Controversy: Tee Draws Parricide Case Parallels, Media Says New Character Echoes Two "GTA 5" Fan Favorites

Though the game is still a year away, Rockstar Games' release of the second "Grand Theft Auto VI" trailer quickly reignited excitement among long-awaiting players. The high-definition visuals and deeper insights into the story and characters have fans eagerly anticipating the 2026 launch.

Beyond the myriad details scrutinized in the trailer, many players' attention was drawn to a T-shirt worn by supporting character Cal Hampton, which boldly states: "Violence Is Gool; Thanks Videogames."

A Nod to a 20-Year-Old Parricide Case?

While the T-shirt immediately became a coveted item for many players, some also drew parallels to a 2004 parricide case in New Mexico. In that incident, 14-year-old Cody Posey, who had endured years of abuse from his stepfather, reportedly snapped after being scolded and slapped, fatally shooting his stepfather, stepmother, and stepsister.

In 2006, anti-video game attorney Jack Thompson attributed the crime to Posey's alleged obsession with the 2002 release "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City," even suing the game company and claiming the game incited him to commit the murders.

Consequently, many players believe Cal's T-shirt could be a satirical jab and a direct response to that "GTA"-related controversy.

Who Does Cal Hampton Remind Us Of?

Interestingly, Cal Hampton, sporting the video game T-shirt, has also led many players and even international media outlets to draw comparisons to Jimmy De Santa, the drug-addled, gaming-obsessed slacker son of "Grand Theft Auto V" protagonist Michael De Santa.

Furthermore, Rockstar's official website description for Cal Hampton states: "He feels safest at home, drinking beer, listening to Coast Guard communications, and browsing the internet in incognito mode." This has also brought to mind another "Grand Theft Auto V" character, the "master hacker" Lester Crest.

Game Rant suggests that Cal's appearance and personality, combined with Rockstar's official description, seem to blend the traits of both Jimmy and Lester. He appears to possess a certain technical expertise while also exhibiting Jimmy's irresponsible demeanor, aligning with the official portrayal of a character who is "at the bottom of American society, but enjoying it."
