Rockstar Games recently surprised fans with the second trailer for "Grand Theft Auto VI," which immediately captivated global audiences with its stunning, opulent graphics. The developer specifically highlighted that the entire trailer—including both cutscenes and in-game footage—was captured directly on a PlayStation 5, sparking widespread discussion across social media.

While the trailer clearly showcased highly realistic visual effects, such as detailed muscle textures, sweat, and authentic reflections in car rearview mirrors, and the overall footage appeared to run at close to 60 FPS, renowned game technical analysis outlet Digital Foundry suggested that, based on past precedents, even with "Grand Theft Auto VI"'s sophisticated graphics, the frame rate on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles is highly likely to be locked at 30 FPS.
The analysis team further explained that the trailer demonstrates "Grand Theft Auto VI"'s exceptional use of technologies like ray tracing and Ray-Traced Global Illumination (RTGI), which contribute to its astonishing realism. These graphical effects, they noted, are nearly impossible to remove without significantly compromising visual quality.
Based on this reasoning, they believe Rockstar will likely opt for a stable 30 FPS baseline to ensure a balance between visual fidelity and overall gameplay experience.

Analysts elaborated that, historically, with the exception of 2006's "Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis," nearly all of Rockstar's titles have run at 30 FPS or even lower frame rates. Therefore, it's widely expected that "Grand Theft Auto VI" will adopt a similar strategy.
Will Players Accept a "Grand Theft Auto VI" Frame Rate Lock?
According to a recent player survey, the majority believe that a stable and consistent 30 FPS is still acceptable in games, particularly in single-player, story-driven titles, where it can still deliver a good experience.
On the NeoGAF forums, many players expressed a preference for 60 FPS but stated they would accept 30 FPS if the game offered excellent content and stable visuals. However, for multiplayer competitive games, higher frame rates are considered essential to ensure precise reactions and smooth performance during competition.

Players generally emphasized that a "good frame rate rhythm" is crucial to avoid screen stuttering or inconsistent latency. They also noted that third-person action games tend to be more acceptable at lower frame rates compared to genres like first-person shooters, which demand higher frame rates.
While most modern console and PC hardware can now support 60 FPS, some cinematic-style games are arguably better suited for 30 FPS, offering a stronger sense of immersion. In response, players hope Rockstar will at least provide a higher frame rate option for premium consoles like the PS5 Pro, catering to advanced players' demands.
