Japanese LEGO MOC master Sakiya Watanabe (creator account n.a.b.e_mocs) has demonstrated his astounding MOC building prowess with a creation themed after Hayao Miyazaki's animated masterpiece, "Howl’s Moving Castle." He has built a fantastical mechanical giant that seems to breathe. The entire structure is assembled from approximately 5,000 bricks and took two months to complete. From construction techniques and parts selection to color design, every aspect showcases his ultimate fidelity to the language of bricks and the artistic essence of the animation!

An Architectural Lifeform Straight Out of the Animation! The Perfect Fusion of Organic Contours and Steel Structures
One of the biggest highlights of this work is its nearly perfect curved surfaces and three-dimensional layering. Watanabe stated that he significantly reduced gaps and cross-sections by using wedge and tile components, and employed SNOT techniques to shape the naturally flowing mechanical contours. To recreate the facial features, he even disassembled a spinner accessory from the 2011 LEGO NINJAGO series to extract the metal counterweight part, using it as the metal frame for the eyes. This achieved an astonishing level of accuracy, showcasing a high-level application of "NPU (Nice Part Usage)."
Note: The SNOT (Studs Not On Top) technique refers to arranging LEGO bricks so that their studs are not facing upwards, but rather to the side, bottom, or even in various non-traditional directions. SNOT breaks this directional limitation, allowing creators to achieve a smoother appearance (as the studs are not visible), present special angles, curves, or details, and create more realistic model surfaces (such as car bodies, building walls, sculptures, etc.)

Obscure Parts Shine Brilliantly! Full Utilization of Galidor and Star Wars Components
For structures like the chimneys, pipes, and support legs, he boldly selected rare parts from the 2002 Galidor series. These uniquely shaped accessories are typically difficult for creators to master due to their special sizes and exaggerated forms, but in this work, they perfectly simulate the castle's irregular, weathered, and industrial texture. Furthermore, the turret uses a hemispherical dome from the 2012 LEGO Star Wars Planets Series as its shell. Magnet parts are then used to attach the cannon inside and out, giving the overall appearance a more dynamic and narrative quality.

Telling a Story Through Color! Recreating the Animation's Mottled Texture
To give the castle a realistic visual sense of age and disrepair, Watanabe did not opt for the dark brown and gray-black color schemes common in the animation. Instead, he used Reddish Brown as the main color, complemented by a variety of retro-toned colors such as Medium Nougat, Dark Orange, Sand Green, Sand Blue, and Dark Red. This created a surface texture resembling a mix of rust and faded paint, faithfully capturing the living architectural atmosphere of Hayao Miyazaki's animation.

The Core Philosophy Behind Professional Creation: The "APE" Principle Achieves a Cascade of Detail
When sharing his MOC creation process with us, Watanabe mentioned that to improve rapidly in a short time, he not only scoured the BrickLink parts database and studied the works of masters on Flickr but also developed his own three creative principles: the "APE" philosophy:
‧ A = Achieving harmony between usual parts and unusual parts
‧ P = Pursuing the best answers as expression
‧ E = Exploration of new applications of parts
This method helped him select, reassemble, and evaluate the function and visual significance of each brick with greater precision.

About the creator n.a.b.e_mocs
Sakiya Watanabe (online creator name n.a.b.e_mocs) has had a deep connection with LEGO since the age of 6, when his parents gave him the LEGO SpongeBob Krusty Krab (3825) set. They also frequently bought him sets from the LEGO Castle series.

Since there were no "The Lord of the Rings" themed sets at the time, he began building his own Middle-earth by reassembling Castle parts, which became his very first LEGO MOC experience. Around the age of 9, he was introduced to the LEGO Star Wars series and started creating MOCs by watching assembly videos on YouTube and imitating the techniques from the official sets. This journey from imitation to self-learning gradually honed his sensitivity to brick types and construction vocabulary, laying a solid foundation for his later complex models. As he grew older, he studied organic chemistry, blending rationality with creativity to exhibit a creator's vision that is both scientific and artistic.

Watanabe's creator account gained significant attention in the LEGO community within six months of its creation, instantly elevating him from a newcomer to a focal point for AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO) and professional creators. Watanabe points out that he achieved this reputation largely through his in-depth research and application of part structures and obscure parts (like those from Galidor and the NINJAGO metal counterweights), as well as his ability to quickly replicate and deconstruct advanced MOC techniques.
