The first film in the "Home Alone" franchise is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Director Chris Columbus, one of the key figures behind the film's creation, recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight (ET), reflecting on the movie's historical achievements and lasting cultural impact.
As a once-sensational box office classic, it's perhaps inevitable that studios would occasionally revisit it for a reboot or remake. "Home Alone" has certainly not escaped this fate. However, Columbus has made it clear he doesn't support such endeavors, stating: "I don't think 'Home Alone' belongs in this era. It was born at a very specific time, and trying to recapture the magic created 35 years ago is a huge mistake. We should just let it be."

Despite Columbus's stance, he can't prevent Disney and 20th Century Studios, who hold the "Home Alone" rights, from continuing to produce sequels and remakes. In a way, the "Home Alone" franchise has been in a constant state of soft reboot since its third installment. It has consistently replaced Macaulay Culkin with new child stars, swapping them out with each new film. While nominally sequels, these films essentially feature new characters replaying the same formula, a common form of "soft reboot" where the world-building continues.
Up to 2021's "Home Sweet Home Alone," the franchise has produced six films in total. As Columbus noted, all subsequent films after Culkin's departure have indeed failed to capture the original magic, consistently receiving far lower critical acclaim than the first two installments.
