Disney already has one Greek mythology franchise going strong with "Percy Jackson and the Olympians," which is gearing up for its third season. But the studio is clearly looking to expand its mythological slate with a very different kind of adaptation. Deadline reports that Disney is developing a standalone movie centered on Medusa, the snake-haired Gorgon of Greek mythology, with a writer and producers now attached.

According to Deadline, Michael Montemayor, a co-writer on Disney’s live-action "Tangled," has been tapped to write the screenplay. Montemayor also developed the original script for Disney’s "Cinderella" spinoff "Stepsisters", making him one of the studio’s go-to writers for its latest live-action projects.
The movie is being developed by Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, with Johnson also producing. The actor previously starred in the Greek mythology-inspired fantasy blockbuster "Hercules," though it remains unclear whether he could also appear in "Medusa."
