Taylor Kitsch Breaks Silence on Gambit Recasting; Channing Tatum Finally Realizes MCU Dream

Taylor Kitsch, who famously portrayed "Gambit" in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," recently broke his silence, addressing his recasting by Channing Tatum years ago.

In the early stages of the 2009 spin-off plans, Tatum was reportedly Fox's top choice, but Kitsch ultimately landed the role. However, as 20th Century Fox repeatedly attempted to launch a "Gambit" solo film, cycling through directors, production stalled for years, leading to the eventual cancellation of its planned 2016 release.

Tatum, who had openly expressed his love for the character for years, finally made his official debut as Gambit in "Deadpool & Wolverine" in 2024, fulfilling a long-held dream.

When asked by "Screen Rant" if he had seen Tatum's version of Gambit, Kitsch stated directly, "No."

As for whether he felt any regret, he calmly replied, "No, not at all, brother. That's the business. I love the path I'm on, the actor I've become, and the stories I'm putting out. For me, Gambit was never in the cards."

Regarding a potential return as Gambit in the future, Kitsch remained non-committal: "Never say never, but I don't know. I love where I'm at right now, no regrets. Sometimes it's not up to me who plays what, so I just focus on the people who want to work with me."

On the other hand, Channing Tatum was overcome with emotion after his MCU debut. He revealed that Ryan Reynolds helped him secure the opportunity, stating, "I thought I'd lost Gambit forever, but Ryan fought for me, and I'll forever owe him. It means the world to me." Tatum also praised "Deadpool & Wolverine" as a "masterpiece," even admitting he "screamed" with excitement in the theater.

Tatum hasn't given up on his solo film dream either. He reiterated in a subsequent interview, "I've been saying for 10 years that I want to make 'Gambit.' Now it's up to Bob Iger and Kevin Feige. I'm praying it happens."

Now, it appears Kitsch has moved on from the past, while Tatum continues to champion his "Gambit" project. The differing perspectives of the two actors perfectly reflect the divergent paths of the character's destiny.
