Channing Tatum Unpacks "Avengers: Doomsday" Secrets: Gambit to Battle Doctor Doom, Accent & Comedy Toned Down

As Marvel's blockbuster "Avengers: Doomsday" enters its production climax, more plot and character details are steadily emerging.

Recently, Channing Tatum, who plays Gambit, revealed his experiences on set during a "Variety" interview. These included a major showdown with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom and new adjustments to his character's portrayal.

Tatum initially stated that he was originally slated for a "massive battle sequence" with Doctor Doom. However, due to an injury, he couldn't fully participate, with a stunt double completing most of the action shots and Tatum only performing close-ups. This revelation confirms previous set photo rumors of a direct confrontation between the X-Men and Doctor Doom. Whether Gambit survives this battle remains a highly anticipated question for fans.

Beyond the action sequences, Tatum also discussed adjustments to his character's personality in the film. He noted that Gambit in "Doomsday" will differ slightly from the version seen in "Deadpool & Wolverine."

"The higher-ups put a lot of thought into the accent issue; they were concerned audiences wouldn't understand, so I won't be 'full Cajun' the whole time," Tatum explained. He added that the Russo Brothers, who are directing, wanted to maintain a degree of humor, but not go full-on comedic like "Deadpool." "They want dramatic tension and intensity. When Gambit takes off his 'carnival mask' and gets serious, that's when audiences will feel the true stakes."

Regarding his character's portrayal, Tatum described Gambit as someone who "likes women, smokes, and drinks; he's not your typical savior hero, but rather a more human, contrasting presence." This characterization, he believes, makes Gambit stand out more vividly within the star-studded "Avengers" lineup.

"Avengers: Doomsday" is currently slated for release on December 18, 2026.
