Following his surprise appearance in "Deadpool & Wolverine," Channing Tatum has once again opened up about his long-cherished dream of bringing the Mutant character Gambit to the big screen.
Channing Tatum revealed that his original "Gambit" film, which he was developing, was ready to go into production before Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, but ultimately got shelved. According to Tatum, that script was "too crazy for Marvel and Disney to ever approve."
In a recent interview with "Variety," Tatum discussed his cameo experience in "Deadpool & Wolverine," describing it as "the highest stakes cosplay ever" and "a childhood dream come true." He also reflected on the previously planned "Gambit" movie, disclosing that it was conceived as an "R-rated romantic comedy," a stark departure from typical superhero films.
"If we would've made that Fox version, it would've never passed," Tatum laughed. "It was an R-rated romantic comedy, and we really went for it. Gambit is a character that could only exist in the 'Deadpool' universe. We even had Mutant sex scenes in there! It was truly wild."
He further elaborated that such a creative approach would be nearly impossible within the Disney system:
"You never know what Disney wants to make, but you definitely know what they won't make. They won't make horror, and they won't make anything with sex," Tatum admitted. While he understands these limitations, he also believes the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs more tonal diversity. "I think Marvel actually needs that contrast, so audiences can see another style, and Gambit is one of the most suitable characters for that."
Now, with Tatum's cameo as a "multiverse Gambit" in "Deadpool & Wolverine" reigniting fan interest, he has expressed his desire to continue playing the character.
"If fans really want to see it, I believe there's still a chance for Gambit to get the stage he deserves," he said. "Perhaps one day, Marvel will remember this somewhat crazy romantic Mutant."
