Ken Matsudaira, famously known for his role in the period drama "Abarenbo Shogun," might have a tough-guy image, but he exploded into pop culture in 2004 with his "Matsuken Samba" (マツケンサンバ) series, a unique blend of period costume and samba music. Recently, thanks to the rise of short-form videos, the song has gone viral again, sparking a massive craze.
Now, FamilyMart Japan has announced the release of the "Ken Matsudaira Original Merch Lucky Bag," which includes a coupon booklet worth 3,000 yen, redeemable at FamilyMart stores. Priced at 3,300 yen, these bags will be sold via lottery, and the announcement has already captured significant online attention.
Ken Matsudaira is a household name in Japan, with a career spanning "Abarenbo Shogun" and countless NHK Taiga dramas. But in 2004, he dropped the catchy "Matsuken Samba," performing a lively samba in a dazzling period costume. The sheer visual impact combined with the incredibly catchy tune propelled him to perform on the prestigious Kohaku Uta Gassen that year.
In recent years, with the pandemic, the song's positive and uplifting vibe resonated with the public. Its resurgence on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) surprised even Matsudaira himself, who found it "a bit baffling." He instantly became a beloved icon for Gen Z, with his merchandise frequently selling out. The "Matsuken Samba" series includes three songs, with "Matsuken Samba II" being the most popular.
