A few years ago, NBCUniversal acquired the rights to "The Exorcist" franchise for a staggering $400 million. Confident in their investment, they brought in David Gordon Green, director of the "Halloween" trilogy, to helm the new installment, "The Exorcist: Believer." The studio had hoped to launch an entirely new sequel trilogy, but the film was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews and a modest box office haul of just $137 million, forcing them to hastily re-evaluate their reboot plans.

Last year, Green announced his departure from directing the subsequent two films. Acclaimed horror director Mike Flanagan, known for "The Haunting of Hill House" and "Doctor Sleep," was then tapped to take over. Today, Deadline revealed the star of the next installment: Scarlett Johansson, an unexpectedly major name for the horror genre.
This marks Johansson's first foray into the horror genre. It's also her second time starring in a soft-reboot sequel for Universal, following "Jurassic World: Rebirth," once again placing the significant responsibility of revitalizing a classic IP's box office appeal on her shoulders.
