Directed by Ryosuke Takahashi and produced by Sunrise, the robot anime series Armored Trooper VOTOMS (装甲騎兵ボトムズ) is an undisputed classic of 80s mecha, with several OVA follow-ups over the years. For many veteran robot anime fans, it's a true legend.
Today, it was announced that the series is officially getting a brand-new anime project after a 15-year hiatus: Armored Trooper VOTOMS: The Witch of Gray, set to launch in 2026. Mamoru Oshii is helming the project as director, with animation handled by Sunrise and Production I.G assisting. The first key visual and a teaser trailer have also been revealed!

Since its original TV broadcast from 1983-1984, Armored Trooper VOTOMS has expanded into various forms, including OVAs, spin-offs, movies, special screenings, and novels. This new entry, "The Witch of Gray," holds significant meaning as one of Sunrise's 50th-anniversary commemorative works.

The last installment in the series was the OVA "Alone Again," released in April 2011. The confirmation of a new production after 15 years, especially with Mamoru Oshii directing, is sure to be a huge surprise for long-time fans.
Given past trends, it's highly probable this will be an OVA, but the official format hasn't been confirmed yet. We'll have to wait for more detailed announcements from the official channels!
