Manga legend Akira Toriyama, whose death in March 2024 broke the hearts of anime and manga fans worldwide, remains deeply missed by countless admirers.
Now, social media users in Japan have reported that Toriyama’s former home and workplace, BIRD STUDIO, appears to be undergoing demolition. The news quickly sparked discussion online. With its unmistakable architectural design, the studio had long attracted visiting fans, but the building may soon survive only in their memories.

The discussion began after a social media user shared photos from the site. Located in Kiyosu, Aichi Prefecture, the building served for years as Toriyama’s home and the base of BIRD STUDIO. Demolition work has now officially begun, with fencing, protective sheeting, traffic cones, and other equipment surrounding the striking yellow structure.
The reason for the demolition remains unknown, though the poster speculated that inheritance tax may be a factor. If the land and building were registered under Toriyama’s name, they would likely be included in his taxable estate. His family may have hoped to preserve the property but ultimately faced a difficult decision due to the potential tax burden.
(Note: This is only speculation from a social media user. No official explanation has been released.)
Toriyama reportedly designed the building himself in 1983, after Dr. Slump became a hit. Both Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball were created at the studio, making it a deeply meaningful destination for generations of his fans.

Some fans are now urging others to act with restraint. They warn that continuing to circulate construction photos and related information online could cause further distress to Toriyama’s family while disrupting the daily lives of nearby residents.
A rise in visitors could also lead to unexpected trouble. Fans are therefore being asked to quietly leave the site alone, at least until the work has been completed.
Even after construction ends, people are being urged not to visit the area for sightseeing unless absolutely necessary, and never to trespass or disturb the neighborhood. With so much attention now focused on the property, fans are being reminded that the best way to honor Toriyama is to show consideration for his family and the local community.
For fans, the thought of losing the studio where so many beloved stories were created is understandably painful. As for why the building is being demolished, the full circumstances will remain unknown unless Toriyama’s family or an official representative chooses to release a statement.
