Manga artist Kimiko Uehara's classic shojo manga, "Inochi no Utsuwa" (いのちの器), which has been serialized since 1991, finally concluded its epic run today (March 3rd) with its 392nd chapter in the April issue of the magazine "For Mrs." After an incredible 35-year journey, the series has reached its grand finale. Fans can also look forward to the release of the 100th and final collected volume on April 16th.

"Inochi no Utsuwa" (いのちの器) first began its serialization in 1991 in the women's monthly magazine "Eve Special for Mrs." It continued its run even after the magazine rebranded as "For Mrs." in 1995, becoming one of the publication's most iconic and representative works.
The story unfolds as a human drama centered around Kyoko Ariyoshi, an obstetrician who inherits her adoptive father's obstetrics and gynecology clinic in rural Azumino. The narrative follows her life with her husband and children, navigating through divorce and reconciliation, and experiencing all the joys and sorrows life throws her way. Through her work of protecting mothers and babies, Kyoko witnesses the brilliance of humanity, depicting the preciousness of life, the unbreakable bonds of family, and her encounters with patients, each carrying their own unique life stories.

This series also holds the distinction of being the longest-running work under the same title. In Japan, only about 20 manga titles have ever reached 100 volumes or more, making this an exceptionally rare milestone, especially within the shojo manga genre.
When asked about the secret to such a long serialization, Kimiko Uehara candidly shared:
"I've been able to keep drawing all this time because I genuinely love drawing manga. When my editor at the time suggested the theme of 'human stories between a female obstetrician and pregnant women,' I immediately thought, 'I have to draw this!' because I didn't know much about pregnancy myself."
She also expressed that throughout the 35 years of serialization, she always held onto one thought: if someone could find healing through this work, then she would draw it as a happy and warm manga. Because when readers are happy, the creator is happy too.

From the golden age of shojo manga in 1991 all the way to 2026, "Inochi no Utsuwa" is more than just a series; it's a gentle presence that has accompanied readers through various stages of their lives. While this 35-year marathon has officially concluded, for many, the profound emotions surrounding life and family will forever remain in their hearts.
