Katsuhisa Minami's hit manga series, The Fable (ザ・ファブル), which is currently in its third installment, "The Fable The third secret," was adapted into a TV anime in 2024.
Today (April 2), the official announcement dropped: The Fable is officially getting a second anime season! This new season will dive straight into the manga's highly anticipated "Yamaoka Arc." They've even released a killer teaser visual, though we're still waiting on that premiere date.
The Fable (ザ・ファブル) kicked off its serialization in "Weekly Young Magazine" back in 2014. The first part wrapped up in 2020, followed by its sequel, "The Fable The second contact," concluding in 2023. Currently, the third installment, "The Fable The third secret," is ongoing.
The story follows Fable, a legendary assassin known for his unparalleled skills, who was trained by "Boss" from a young age to execute countless difficult missions. However, fearing Fable's identity might be exposed, Boss orders him to live a year in Osaka as an ordinary person, strictly forbidding him from killing anyone during this period. Thus, Fable assumes the alias Akira Sato and embarks on a completely different life.
The first season of The Fable anime aired from April to September 2024, exclusively on Disney+. The good news is, the original crew is back for Season 2! That includes Tezuka Productions handling animation, Ryosuke Takahashi directing, and Yuya Takashima returning as series composition writer.
This "Yamaoka Arc" is a major highlight from the manga's mid-to-late stages. It centers on Yamaoka, the second-in-command of the "Fable" organization, whose insane personality—marked by a complete lack of fear and a penchant for sadistic killings—ignites an internal rebellion within the assassin group. He becomes one of Akira Sato's most formidable foes. This arc plunges into extreme darkness and intense psychological battles, creating a stark contrast to the series' usual comedic slice-of-life moments.
Author Katsuhisa Minami shared that the "Yamaoka Arc" holds a lot of memories for him. He's super excited to see who'll voice the new characters and how the new opening and ending themes will capture the overall vibe. He's just as hyped as the fans!
Director Ryosuke Takahashi added that The Fable actually has a lot of messages it wants to convey to modern society, and he's thrilled to be involved in such a project.
It looks like Season 2 is set to hit the manga's peak! However, the first season faced lower discussion due to its Disney+ exclusivity, and its animation quality was often criticized as inferior to the manga. Will Season 2 manage to turn that perception around? It all depends on whether the production team can deliver a truly memorable adaptation of this arc.
