Charlie Kaufman, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," is finally set to direct his fifth feature film, "Later The War," following his 2020 film "I'm Thinking of Ending Things." Distribution rights for the new project will be shopped at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.

The film also recently announced its initial cast, featuring Channing Tatum, Tessa Thompson, and Patsy Ferran (pictured below). Production is slated to begin next year in the Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus. This marks a restart for the project, which had previously filmed some scenes in May of last year before an unexplained halt in production. Before the hiatus, Eddie Redmayne was attached to star, but he was unable to return for the resumed production, leading to Tatum stepping into the role.

"Later The War" is an adaptation of "Debby’s Dream House" from Iddo Gefen's short story collection "Jerusalem Beach." Tatum will play the lead character, Pickman, a popular actor and director best known for a hit physical comedy he starred in with his wife, Kiki (Thompson).

Despite his professional success, Pickman increasingly feels a sense of emptiness. Seeking the artistic validation he craves, he decides to make a serious film about the Holocaust, even as his marriage falters. Meanwhile, Kiki continues to develop her one-woman show. Pickman later meets Deborah (Ferran), a poet unaware of his true identity, whose approval he desperately seeks. However, events do not unfold as he hopes. True to Kaufman's signature style, the film is expected to feature a blend of reality and illusion, with dreamlike narrative techniques.
