Variety exclusively reported today that the long-gestating third installment of the "21 Jump Street" film series, which has been shelved for 12 years, is finally moving forward. Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, and Jonah Hill, key stars from the first two films, are reportedly in negotiations to reprise their roles.

However, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed the first two installments, will only serve as producers this time. Rodney Rothman, co-writer of the second film, is set to take over directing duties. Rothman will co-write the script with Hill and Meghan Malloy, co-writer of "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken." A release date has not yet been set.

Notably, the film's working title skips "23" and is directly named "24 Jump Street." This naming choice is widely speculated to be a nod to the fake post-credits sequence in the second film, implying that the duo undertook a series of undercover missions, thus jumping directly to "24." In fact, Lord teased this title concept five years ago, cryptically stating that they skipped "23" because they had some currently confidential plans reserved for it. (Image Source: Screen Crush)

Some fans may recall that a third installment was originally planned as a crossover event with the "Men in Black" franchise, featuring Tatum and Hill. However, Tatum admitted years ago that this plan was scrapped due to exorbitant personnel costs, as the combined roster of producers from both major franchises was extensive, and none were willing to reduce their fees.

It remains unclear if the currently planned third film will incorporate any "Men in Black" elements, but based on current information, it would not be the main focus, if at all.
