Masamune Shirow's iconic manga, "Ghost in the Shell," has a brand new anime adaptation, "Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL," hitting screens this season. Three episodes in, and it's already grabbing major attention for its stellar production.
Following the third episode's broadcast, the official team dropped a bombshell: veteran voice actor Akio Otsuka is back! Fans are buzzing with excitement over this surprise return, especially since he's famously voiced Batou for years. This time, he's stepping into the role of Colonel Mares. Otsuka himself commented, "I'm sure fans of the original manga will absolutely love this work. I genuinely adore 'Ghost in the Shell'."

While the new anime is killing it, the complete recast of the main characters' voice actors has left some long-time fans feeling a bit nostalgic for the previous talent, as this series features an entirely different lineup from past "Ghost in the Shell" anime.
Akio Otsuka made his debut as Colonel Mares in the recently aired third episode, titled "JUNK JUNGLE ii + MEGATECH MACHINE i + ii," officially joining the new anime's cast.

The official team also immediately shared Akio Otsuka's thoughts on joining the new anime:
"I'm Akio Otsuka, playing Colonel Mares in 'Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL.' This production was crafted with the philosophy of 'faithfully representing the original manga's style,' and I'm confident that fans of the source material will be incredibly satisfied. I genuinely love 'Ghost in the Shell' as a work. Today, Masamune Shirow-sensei's worldview is steadily converging with reality. I believe everyone will inevitably exclaim, 'Masamune Shirow is truly incredible!' This is the very origin point for the 'Ghost in the Shell' anime series later created by directors Mamoru Oshii and Kenji Kamiyama. I hope everyone enjoys this work!"

For long-time "Ghost in the Shell" fans, seeing Akio Otsuka return to this new anime is undeniably a huge surprise and a massive win. Even though he's not voicing the familiar Batou, his appearance as a different character still feels incredibly significant.
With three episodes out, "Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL" is certainly turning heads. Its direct adaptation from the original manga offers a fresh take compared to previous "Ghost in the Shell" anime styles. But even for newcomers who haven't seen the older adaptations, this is definitely a classic reimagining worth diving into!
