Japan's New Trading Card Association Joins Parliamentary League, But Secret Member List Sparks Player Outcry

Several members of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have decided to form a parliamentary league aimed at promoting the growth of the trading card industry. The league plans to develop more comprehensive regulations to address pressing issues like the increasing circulation of counterfeit cards and widespread scalping by resellers. The news has sparked a mix of reactions and discussions among netizens.

On the same day, the "Japan Trading Card Association" (JPTCA) emerged, launching its X (formerly Twitter) account yesterday and announcing its participation in the inaugural meeting of the LDP's "Trading Card Parliamentary League" (TCPL) on July 23. Given the high level of community interest in this meeting, the JPTCA has faced scrutiny over its undisclosed member companies, leading many to question its legitimacy and representative power.

The "Japan Trading Card Association" was officially established on November 14, 2025, and launched its official website on May 25, 2026. However, its X account only went live on July 22, making it an unfamiliar entity to many online users.

The association's co-representative directors are Yoshimasa Mizuno and Naoko Ito. Its directors include:

Yuji Yamaguchi, who operates YAMAKOMA ASSET BANK, a business specializing in appraising cards and other collectibles.

Ryosuke Okaya, representative of Multiple Inc., which runs the card shop "Toreca Lounge."

After the JPTCA announced its participation in the TCPL's inaugural meeting, netizens quickly noticed that the association's previously public list of member companies included almost no major TCG game developers or publishers, and only a handful of card shops. This led to widespread doubts about the association's representativeness and concerns about its potentially biased composition.

Adding to the suspicion, the official website, which had previously listed participating companies, suddenly made the list private late on July 23. This move further fueled speculation about the association's background and its claim to represent the "private sector" of the card industry.

▼ Currently, the association's official website only shows "COMING SOON..." for participating companies.

In response to the sudden change in the participating company list, the Japan Trading Card Association issued a statement via X. The association explained that its official website is still under construction and not fully complete, as it needs to coordinate information releases with the Trading Card Parliamentary League's inaugural meeting. The JPTCA stated that it is continuously engaging with more companies and related organizations for partnerships, and website content will be progressively updated and refined.

Regarding event information and the list of participating companies, the association noted that these details are still being adjusted and asked for public patience, promising to re-release the information once it has been fully organized.

While the actual scope and impact of these associations and the parliamentary league remain uncertain, many netizens are pessimistic. They believe such government initiatives won't improve the market and that the focus should instead be on cracking down on malicious hoarders, bulk buyers, and scalpers. Only time will tell how these developments unfold.
