Thanos' 'Six-Year Buildup' Was a Fan Delusion, Says Kevin Feige: Marvel President Addresses Doctor Doom's 'Sudden' Arrival in "Avengers: Doomsday"

San Diego Comic-Con reached its peak yesterday, with the core cast and crew of Marvel's year-end tentpole, "Avengers: Doomsday," not only interacting with a massive crowd of fans, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was also in attendance. During the event, Feige was pressed on some long-standing questions, such as: The previous big bad of the "Avengers" series, Thanos, had years of buildup before his appearance, but this time, Doctor Doom seems to be making a direct, unheralded debut. Will audiences connect with him as strongly as they did with Thanos?

Addressing these concerns and doubts, Feige responded: "I think — I was just telling someone else this — the buildup for Thanos was really something people imagined in their heads for many years. He was always just sitting on a chair until he finally got up, picked up the Infinity Gauntlet, and said he was going to take action himself. He also yelled a few short lines at Ronan during a video call. That's pretty much all the buildup there was for Thanos. I remember there were a lot of memes making fun of Thanos just sitting in his chair, and there was even a Twitter account that would post daily (as Thanos) saying: 'I'm still sitting in my chair, not moving.' The actual content was funnier than my description. It wasn't until we started shooting "Avengers: Infinity War" that we said, 'This is when we're officially introducing Thanos to the audience.' That's what we did; that's what "Infinity War" truly accomplished. And that's also how we're approaching Doctor Doom. "Doomsday" is Doctor Doom's origin story; audiences will gradually uncover and learn more about his background, whether you already know him from the comics or have no idea who he is. This film is for all of you."
