Director Mike Flanagan, known for "Doctor Sleep," is helming the new "The Exorcist" sequel, "The Exorcist: Martyrs," which has now entered post-production and is slated for release on March 12 next year. While an official plot synopsis has yet to be revealed, recent reports from other outlets have offered an early glimpse into the film's storyline.
Highly accurate entertainment reporter Daniel Richtman recently reported on his Patreon page that "Martyrs" centers on a female police officer raising her son alone. Thirteen years prior, she apprehended a notorious Satanic serial killer. Now, she finds herself investigating a new series of murders intimately connected to her past. Simultaneously, her 12-year-old son becomes the target of a terrifying demonic entity.

Richtman also detailed the film's cast and their respective roles. Scarlett Johansson takes on the lead as the female police officer, with Diane Lane portraying her mother. John Leguizamo is cast as Father Sunday, the aforementioned serial killer. Laurence Fishburne will play the priest primarily responsible for performing the exorcism ritual, while Chiwetel Ejiofor is set to appear as a priest connected to the case.

Additional cast members, whose roles have not yet been disclosed, include former DC "Supergirl" Sasha Calle, "Hamnet" child star Jacobi Jupe, and Flanagan's frequent collaborators: Hamish Linklater, Carla Gugino, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, and Flanagan's wife, Kate Siegel.
Although this film follows "The Exorcist: Believer" in production, its story will not be a direct continuation. Instead, it will tell a new narrative set within the same "Exorcist" universe. "Believer" was originally planned as the first installment of a connected trilogy, but those plans were scrapped due to its disappointing box office performance. Flanagan has since taken over writing and directing duties to forge a fresh storyline.
