Following the Japanese release of Godzilla -0.0, attention has already turned to whether Takashi Yamazaki might transform the story that began with Godzilla Minus One into a full trilogy. The director, who won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One, recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about his latest film’s open-ended finale and the possibility of directing another Godzilla movie.

Yamazaki admitted that the odds of a third film are currently “fifty-fifty.” He stressed that he is pleased with the ending of Godzilla -0.0 and wants audiences to interpret the story for themselves. As he explained:
“That said, I would feel a little sad if Godzilla -0.0 ended up being the last Godzilla film I directed,” he said. “I already have other films lined up, including Grandgear and several additional projects. But at some point in my career, I would still like to return to the world of Godzilla and see how much further we can expand it.”

Next, he will head to Hollywood to make the sci-fi mecha film Grandgear, which will be released by Sony Pictures and produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot. The film is scheduled to open on February 18, 2028. Yamazaki said live-action mecha has long been a genre he wanted to tackle, and Grandgear will also mark his first English-language feature.
Yamazaki also revealed that while making Godzilla -0.0, he deliberately avoided setting out to “surpass the previous film,” fearing that doing so could strip the new movie of its own identity. Whether the series will continue beyond this chapter remains up to the studio.
