“We won't always be fighting this battle alone!!” Star Wars Alien Spotlight: Part Four - The Twi'lek

The influence of Star Wars is boundless, setting off a generational trend that has impacted both the film industry and the world of art. Today, a multitude of series continue to emerge, solidifying its status as an enduring and indelible science fiction icon. Director  George Lucas 's seemingly infinite creativity and imagination have added immense brilliance to this franchise, and its vast alien universe is particularly captivating. This time, we're introducing one of the most famous species in the Star Wars galaxy. You might be unfamiliar with their name, but you have definitely seen this species—the Twi'lek.

>>>The Twi'leks

As one of the most common species in the Star Wars universe, the Twi'leks hail from their homeworld of Ryloth, which is why they are also known as Rylothians. The most prominent feature of a Twi'lek is the pair of long lekku on their heads, which differ in position and shape from those of the Togruta. Twi'leks typically have two lekku, but they can have as many as four. Each Twi'lek has a unique skin color, with a diverse range including blue, green, orange, purple, and even white, showcasing the variety within the species. Twi'leks of different colors also have different designations; for example, blue-skinned Twi'leks can be called Rutian.

Other aspects of Twi'lek anatomy are largely similar to humans. A simple way to distinguish between the sexes is by their ears; females have more cone-shaped ears compared to males, while males tend to have sharper teeth. Unlike the Togruta, some agile Twi'leks can even use their lekku to grasp objects. The appendages are also sensitive to slight touches, and even minor damage to the lekku can negatively affect a Twi'lek's health. Additionally, Twi'leks have a higher body temperature than other humanoid species, which can rise even further when they are frightened.

Twi'leks have their own language called Twi'leki, a mode of communication that combines spoken words with the movement of their lekku. It's similar in concept to sign language; for instance, crossing the tips of the lekku can signify "I love you." Female Twi'leks were often sold as slaves or dancers, which is why we see them in the cantinas of Tatooine and the palace of Jabba the Hutt. Because Twi'leks are so common throughout the Star Wars galaxy, some employers hire them for infiltration and disguise missions. On the Twi'lek homeworld of Ryloth, there lives a creature called the gutkurr, which is the Twi'leks' greatest natural predator.

Among the most famous Twi'leks are Jedi Master Aayla Secura from the prequel trilogy and General Hera Syndulla from *Star Wars Rebels*. The all-blue Aayla is a Rutian Twi'lek, and her sexy figure has surely left a lasting impression on Star Wars fans. During the Clone Wars, Aayla led the 327th Star Corps in numerous battles. In *The Clone Wars* animated series, she can be seen fighting alongside Commander Bly to maintain peace. Tragically, she could not escape the clutches of Order 66.

Hera appears in the animated series *Star Wars Rebels* as the captain of the *Ghost*. With her calm composure and superb piloting skills, she leads her crew through countless adventures and crises. Born on Ryloth, her parents were leaders who commanded Republic forces during the Clone Wars. The rise of the Empire sowed the seeds of rebellion against tyranny in Hera from a young age. From the *Ghost* to Phoenix Squadron, Hera dedicated her life to the resistance, fighting from the time of Order 66 all the way to the Battle of Endor and witnessing the rise and fall of the Empire. She eventually had a son with the surviving Jedi, Kanan Jarrus. It is rumored that the live-action version of the Ghost crew will appear in Ahsoka's solo series, and we eagerly await General Hera's debut.

The most famous male Twi'lek is undoubtedly Bib Fortuna. As the majordomo to the crime lord Jabba the Hutt, Bib's trademarks were his exceptionally long lekku and his arrogant demeanor. He served Jabba for over a decade, and the Rancor in the pit below was a gift from Bib to Jabba. After Jabba's death, Bib took over his criminal regime on Tatooine, until the arrival of Boba Fett, who ended his life with a single blaster shot.
