"Do I look stupid to you? Am I a Gamorrean?" Star Wars Alien Showcase Part 6: The Gamorreans

Ever since its groundbreaking debut in 1977, Star Wars has ignited wave after wave of sci-fi trends, fulfilling the cosmic cravings and imaginations of countless fans across generations. Within this universe exist tens of thousands of alien species, each with a unique appearance, yet often with traces of animal inspiration—be it monkeys, elephants, cats, or even pigs. Variations on a single biological theme have given rise to a dazzling array of species throughout the galaxy. The species we're introducing today hails from the distant Outer Rim and is a fearsome berserker in the Star Wars world. If you've seen Star Wars, you definitely remember them!

>>>The Gamorreans

When it comes to the Gamorreans, everyone is surely familiar with them; you're guaranteed to see them the moment you step into Jabba's Palace. The Gamorreans hail from the Outer Rim planet of Gamorr, a world covered in forests, though the native Gamorreans have engaged in extensive deforestation for agricultural needs. Gamorr is located near territory controlled by the Hutts, leading to a deep-rooted connection between the two species. The most defining features of the Gamorreans are their green skin and porcine appearance, although a few have pink skin. For both males and females, their upturned snouts, protruding tusks, and burly physiques make them look all the more ferocious.

Gamorrean society is structured around clans, led by a male and a female. However, the great responsibility of sustaining the clan falls to the female leader. The male Gamorrean leader is called a "Warlord"; as the clan's strongest warrior, he is responsible for leading the male members in training and warfare. The female leader is known as a "Matron," and she primarily leads the female members in farming and hunting. Despite their primitive nature, a Warlord does not use violence to coerce a female into becoming a Matron, because the male's leadership status is determined by his marriage to the Matron. Consequently, the Matron will choose a brave and skilled warrior to be her husband. Gamorreans view war as a source of honor and prefer melee weapons like axes, spears, or daggers over blasters.

Interestingly, male Gamorreans are divided into four classes: Warlord, Clan boars, Tuskers, and Veterans. Unlike the Warlord, who is chosen by the Matron, Clan boars are typically Gamorreans married to other female clan members, serving as captains who lead others in forming an army to protect the clan. They can also acquire better gear and weapons by protecting their wives. Tuskers are primarily composed of unmarried male Gamorreans and form a large part of the Gamorrean army. If a Tusker is chosen by the Matron, he can be directly promoted to Warlord. The fourth class, Veterans, consists of retired or disabled Gamorreans. This is the most respected class within the entire clan, responsible for training young Gamorreans to become excellent warriors.

The entire year of Gamorrean activity is determined by the four seasons. Spring on Gamorr is known as slushtime. Continuous rain makes Gamorr's natural ecosystem lush and green, but the overcast skies and showers also make the Gamorreans feel melancholic. Veterans also take advantage of the spring to begin training Gamorrean warriors. Summer is called wartime, when male Gamorreans leave their clans to wage war and expand their territory, while the females continue to cultivate crops and hunt.

Autumn is known as croptime, when Gamorreans begin to harvest the food accumulated over the past half-year in preparation for the coming winter. In addition, this is when the Gamorreans conduct their class assignments. Those injured in war can enter the Veterans class, and female Gamorreans who have lost their husbands will begin to seek new partners in the autumn. Winter is called coldtime, when Gamorr becomes covered in ice and snow. Clans that were victorious in the summer will pass the winter safely, while defeated clans may face famine or even extinction. During the winter, Gamorreans become more gentle and romantic. Tuskers will use this period to seek the attention of a Matron, picking the first flowers of spring to give to their desired partner.

Gamorreans have their own language, known as Gamorrese. To other species, it sounds just like the grunting of pigs, but they can actually understand the official language of the Republic. Gamorreans are primitive by nature, believing there is no problem that violence cannot solve. Therefore, they prefer to communicate with crude language or gestures, whether with family or other species. Their personal hygiene is also very poor; they do not proactively change their clothes or clean the mucus from their snouts, and they are even incapable of leaving their planet on their own.

Because of their dull-witted and straightforward nature, most Gamorreans are hired as guards. We can see them in Jabba's Palace or in "The Book of Boba Fett" series. In fact, one of the Gamorrean guards who fell into the Rancor pit with Luke in the original trilogy is named Jubnuk, and he ultimately escaped from the Rancor's stomach. However, not all Gamorreans are so primitive. In the novels, there was a Gamorrean pilot in the Republic named Voort saBinring, who joined Rogue Squadron and helped the early Republic win numerous battles.
