Ever since its debut in 1977, the impact Star Wars has had on the world has been unstoppable. Beyond its captivating plot and lore, tributes to this sci-fi masterpiece can be seen in subsequent film and television works. In terms of alien creature design, while many humanoid species can be seen, the vast galaxy is filled with an even greater variety of alien races in all shapes and sizes. Today, we're going to look at a species that has appeared in films, animation, and live-action series alike—their ferocious appearance has made them one of the most renowned hunters in the galaxy!
>>>The Trandoshans
The Trandoshans, also known as T'doshok, inhabit the planet Trandosha, a densely forested world located in the Mid Rim. It is orbited by a moon called Kashyyyk, the homeworld of the Wookiees. Trandoshans stand over two meters tall on average and are covered in scales, which can range in color from gray, green, and red to the more common brown. Their eyes are typically yellow, though purple eyes have also been recorded.
As their appearance suggests, Trandoshans share many traits with common lizards. They hatch from eggs, are cold-blooded, shed their skin annually, and can even regenerate lost limbs, although this ability is limited to before old age (around 54 years). Like the Rodians, Trandoshans' eyes can see in the infrared spectrum. Their clawed, webbed limbs usually have three to four digits; while not particularly dexterous, they are suitable for climbing trees. Combined with their naturally powerful physique, this makes Trandoshans exceptionally talented at hunting prey.
Trandoshans have a relatively short lifespan compared to other species. They are considered adults at fifteen, middle-aged at thirty-five, and enter old age after fifty. Individuals over sixty are rare and thus highly respected within their communities. Trandoshans are accustomed to moving barefoot, which grants them greater agility. Their clothing is often made from the hides of their prey, though some wear armor for protection. Upon reaching adulthood, Trandoshans undergo a rite of passage that involves completing a solo hunt, a cultural practice that can be traced back to their faith.
Trandoshans worship a goddess known as the "Scorekeeper" and believe that by hunting other species, they are awarded "Jagannath points" by her. This belief drives most Trandoshans to become bounty hunters or mercenaries, and those who accumulate more points enjoy a higher status in Trandoshan society. Wookiee pelts, in particular, are considered a source of a great number of points, leading to a long and deep-seated conflict with the Wookiees. However, if a Trandoshan is captured alive, their points are reset to zero. They can reclaim their previous points and status by killing their captor.
Due to their lack of manual dexterity, high-scoring Trandoshans often employ X10-D droids to perform manual labor for them. Despite their bloodthirsty and brutal nature, if you save a Trandoshan's life, they will become your "Ghrakhowsk," a life-debt protector who will defend you with their own life—an act considered highly honorable in Trandoshan eyes. The primary diet of Trandoshans consists of insects, but they also have a traditional delicacy called "flatcake," which resembles a pancake. Trandoshans speak Dosh as their native language, which is composed of sharp hisses and roars, and they have a written script resembling Arabic.
However, not all Trandoshans are so ferocious. Some are able to work peacefully alongside Wookiees, befriend Jedi, and even become Jedi Masters, such as Sskeer from the High Republic era. The most famous Trandoshan is undoubtedly Bossk, who appeared in The Empire Strikes Back as part of the group of bounty hunters tasked with capturing the Millennium Falcon. Inheriting the legacy of his father, a former head of the Bounty Hunters' Guild, Bossk became a renowned bounty hunter in the galaxy, on par with Boba Fett. He participated in numerous missions and eventually retired peacefully. Additionally, Trandoshans can be seen in the series The Book of Boba Fett, where they control one-third of Mos Espa.
