“I require no glory, only results!!” Star Wars Alien Grand Prix Stop 12: The Chiss

Since the debut of Star Wars, it has planted the seeds for countless space movies, which continue to sprout and grow to this day, creating an unstoppable global sci-fi phenomenon. Within this phenomenon, Star Wars has become one of the mightiest trees. Beyond its epic world-building, each alien species has its own detailed lore, which is one of the most captivating aspects of this masterpiece. Today, we're looking at the species of a major character from the animated series *Star Wars Rebels*. Although only mentioned and rarely seen in live-action films, it is believed they are destined to make a brilliant appearance in future scripts. Let's get to know this mysterious alien species!

>>>The Chiss

The Chiss live on Csilla, a mysterious, ice-covered planet located in the Unknown Regions. The Chiss are one of the alien species in Star Wars that most closely resemble humans in appearance, with similar height and facial features, as well as the same number of fingers, toes, and a human-like torso. Their most distinctive features are their deep blue skin and glowing red irises, which gives them an even more enigmatic and somber aura.

Although they resemble humans, the senses of the Chiss are far superior. Their red eyes grant them excellent vision, allowing them to see in the infrared spectrum, and their hearing is also a level above that of ordinary humans. Furthermore, the Chiss have a strong sensitivity to the Force, especially among young Chiss females, who are born with the abilities of foresight and telepathy, which they call Third Sight and Second Sight. However, this gift is treated as a secret by the Chiss Ascendancy, which governs the Unknown Regions, leading many who possess these abilities to be unaware of them.

Additionally, if a Chiss girl can master her abilities, she will be trained by the Ascendancy to become a navigator for the fleet, using their foresight to plot hyperspace routes through the treacherous Unknown Regions. These girls are called "ozyly-esehembo," which translates to sky-walker, serving as a small Easter egg in the lore. This Force-sensitivity tends to fade with age, but the skills can be enhanced through training.

Chiss society is structured around the Ascendancy, whose members are the nobles of Chiss society, known as the "Aristocra," comprising forty families. The higher body responsible for legislation and execution is called the "Syndicure," which is formed and managed by nine ruling families, governing all rules within their domain. Despite their formidable appearance, the Chiss military has specific "preemptive-strike laws" which strictly prohibit acts of preemptive warfare. Violators are punished with exile. This ensures the Chiss do not invade other territories, but this policy has also resulted in the wider galaxy knowing very little about them.

The language of the Chiss is Cheunh; however, due to their limited contact with the outside world, they also use trade languages as a medium for communicating with other species. The Chiss naming convention involves three parts contained within a single name. Taking Grand Admiral Thrawn as an example, his full name is "Mitth'raw'nuruodo." The first part, "Mitth," represents his family name; the middle part, "raw," is his given name; and the final part, "nuruodo," is related to his social standing and titles. But for convenience, most Chiss use the middle part as their core name, such as "Thrawn".

The most famous, and arguably the only, Chiss to appear in the series is the renowned Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn. As a leader in the Chiss Ascendancy's fleet, Thrawn not only stopped pirate incursions but also successfully defended his homeworld from invaders. After the Clone Wars, he decided to assist the Empire in restoring order to the galaxy for the benefit of his people. Ultimately, with his extraordinary strategy and courage, he successfully graduated from the Imperial Royal Academy and rose to become a Grand Admiral of the Navy, leading the Seventh Fleet to complete various missions for the Empire.

It is worth noting that Thrawn believes one must understand their enemy before defeating them; therefore, he often formulates his strategies through an appreciation of culture and art, which makes Thrawn a charismatic figure, despite being on the side of the Empire. As two of the Emperor's most favored servants, Thrawn and Darth Vader had a deep connection, and he had even undertaken missions with Anakin before his fall to the dark side. During the final invasion of Lothal, he was defeated thanks to the heroic resistance of its people and the help of the Rebellion. He and Ezra Bridger, who came to fight him, were both pulled into hyperspace by the creatures known as Purrgil, disappearing ever since. This ties into Ahsoka Tano's storyline in *The Mandalorian*, and we look forward to his appearance in future series!
